ICC Sydney secures $200 million in events

23 Oct 2015

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres has announced events worth more than $200 million have been secured for International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) – more than a year out from the venue opening in December 2016.

“Today is an important milestone made possible by this Government’s $1.5 billion investment to redevelop Darling Harbour for the priority purpose of hosting international events that boost our knowledge economy,” Mr Ayres said.

“With NSW Government support, Business Events Sydney (BESydney) has secured global events bringing international leaders to Sydney in finance and professional services, information technology, infrastructure, education, research and health.”

BESydney CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith said international business delegates spend up to six-and-a-half times more than regular tourists, while stimulating the knowledge economy which is critical in the wake of the mining boom.

“Business Events Sydney has secured the $200 million worth of events up to 2023, drawing high yield international visitors to ICC Sydney who are contributing to trade, investment, tourism and global talent recruitment,” Ms Lewis-Smith said.

ICC Sydney CEO Geoff Donaghy confirmed the venue’s support in achieving the milestone: “I’m thrilled our support of Business Events Sydney has helped to realise this important ICC Sydney milestone.”
