ICC Sydney’s ever-enhanced employee benefits and evolving recruitment campaigns

With so much change afoot due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resurgence of in person events since restrictions eased earlier this year, we are proud of the approaches ICC Sydney has taken to keep our core team intact and recruit fresh new talent to bolster our ranks. From upskilling our team members to meet modern event management demands, to enriching company culture through proactive diversity and inclusion initiatives, developing high performing talent and re-affirming and deepening partnerships with leading vocational education providers – ICC Sydney is at the fore with an ever-stronger team to service events, clients, stakeholders and our community to the world class standards synonymous with the venue.

Training and development
Strategic partnerships with leading vocational training providers including TAFE NSW enabled us to launch our inaugural Professional Growth Traineeship Program with 15 trainees already getting paid to study and work at ICC Sydney since the first January 2022 intake. ICC Sydney’s paid traineeships and apprenticeships encompass a raft of roles and certifications across culinary, audio visual production, digital media, events and customer service, risk and reception.
Internal training opportunities have been elevated with the development of a High Performance Program. Through a rigorous selection process, the 12-month program identifies senior members of the ICC Sydney team and develops their business management knowledge and skills through a Mini Master of Business Administration course delivered through the Australian Institute of Management as well as self-discovery, cross business functional exposure opportunities and management learning days. Furthermore, a Future Leaders program is underdevelopment and will be rolled out to 3ICs and 4ICs soon.
Recruiting to best serve event needs
Our team maintains a close working relationship with neighbouring University of Technology Sydney and event management students will find great opportunities available. Such was the case for Victoria Dahkoul – recruited as a Corporate Receptionist, Victoria was quickly identified as a perfect candidate for a role in our Event Planning team. Jake Piccirillo (Senior Food and Beverage Floor Manager - Skills Trainer) and Christopher O'Dea (Manager, Event Set-up) are examples of the rewarding careers on offer at ICC Sydney – both began in casual roles and were swiftly selected to join the permanent team in recognition of their skills and aptitude.
As part of our outreach efforts sharing updates on our dynamic industry and the roles available at ICC Sydney, we will participate at the Sydney Jobs Fair hosted by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment to be held at ICC Sydney on 28 June 2022. Our team members are often called upon to share their own personal career path stories, such as Gregory Wright, Chef de Cuisine, who was invited by TAFE NSW to speak to year eight and nine students. Similarly ICC Sydney has participated in industry career days at William Blue College of Hospitality Management and the International College of Management, Sydney.
Beyond the local talent pools, ICC Sydney is actively recruiting globally both via our ASM Global network as well as tapping into suitable international university student programs such as one with the the Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Australia’s borders are open to international students and working holiday visa holders and the venue readily embraces suitable candidates looking to gain experience while working and learning from leaders in the business events industry.
Fostering a culture of respect and fairness
To drive our strong positive culture and team member engagement, ICC Sydney has reinvigorated diversity and inclusion streams led by champions within the business. The Same Same Collective, ICC Sydney’s LGBTQI+ diversity stream for instance, recently accepted an influx of 40 members as it was re-launched in alignment with World Pride month.
We recognise that making a difference is important in the work lives of our people and to this end opportunities abound to participate in our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives across the business, from developing and implementing social contributions with community partners as well as environmental sustainable initiatives – there are a multitude of opportunities to not only participate in social activities, but also benefit the world in which we live.
Importantly, ICC Sydney continues to develop our ties with First Nations organisations such as KARI Foundation and Eora College to actively provide employment opportunities for First Nations people.
